If you’ve ever wondered what winter engagement sessions are like in Washington, D.C., this session is an unfairly high bar. The district has not seen snow like this since 2018! So when my brides reach out wanting a “wintery engagement session,” I’m quick to reset expectations. However, we could not have gotten luckier for Andrew and Rachel’s engagement session! Just a few days before their scheduled session date, it snowed… and snowed… and stayed cold enough to stay all weekend long to gift them a snowy engagement session!
You might recognize these cuties from their proposal shared back in November. Whenever a groom-to-be reaches out wanting me to capture their surprise proposal, I honestly get nerves. I’m excited to have impressed the groom. But will my photos live up to the bride’s expectations? In this case, they must have! Because Rachel reached out just a couple weeks later with a wedding date and a request to have me photograph it. I was THRILLED when I got to welcome them officially to the ENP Family.
They could have easily settled for the mini session we squeezed in after Andrew popped the question. But I guess the connection we made with our blushing bride was a success – we couldn’t get enough!! We scheduled this session at Daughters of the American Revolution headquarters. I expected the neutral marble to provide enough of a backdrop in the midst of a dead winter scene. Then the forecast came! I was so giddy to let Rachel and Andrew know there might just be some snow! Between the beautiful snow, the iconic marble scene, and Rachel and Andrew’s impeccable monochrome outfits, my job couldn’t have been easier.
Well, unless you want to count the frigid cold as a challenge. Ok, it was. 16 degrees. My hands froze quick, which is never fun when you’re trying to press tiny buttons on a camera. And we took frequent warm-up breaks to keep the couple comfortable.
If you are considering a snowy engagement session, I can’t recommend these rechargeable hand warmers enough. They became a life saver! Bundle up. Take frequent warm-up breaks with heavier coats and hand warmers. Sneak thin, extra layers under your engagement session outfits. And bring a hot beverage! These tips can make all the difference when planning a session in the winter.
The results speak for themselves! Enjoy Rachel & Andrew’s engagement session, and stay tuned for their wedding photos coming November 2024!
