With a few simple, elegant details and an iconic wedding venue like National Press Club and Holy Trinity Catholic Church, your D.C. wedding can easily look like it was made for Washingtonian magazine. But aside from the lovely, traditional wedding elements, Patrick and Nyla also shared intimate moments with each other and their guests that were so natural to capture.
A quick disclaimer before we jump in: The photos from this wedding are primarily telling the story from the groom’s perspective of the day. That’s because I had the honor of serving Patrick and Nyla as their second shooter, under my friend Kylie as lead (Kylie Hinson Photography)! The photos below are from my camera and edited in my style for portfolio purposes.
Hotel lighting is rarely akin to beautiful wedding day details. I was skeptical I’d come away with shots to be proud of when I walked into JW Marriott and saw the lobby lighting. However, with just a little flash and a simple coffee table nearby, I actually ended up creating groom details I loved! There is something about their simplicity that I think fit with the rest of the wedding and featured enough of the Groom’s style to begin the storytelling of their day.
After grabbing a few detail shots, it was time to get Patrick ready to see his bride. Thanks to help from his best man, his bowtie was perfectly straightened and cummerbund strapped. All was done with time to spare to read a letter from Nyla.
It’s always so fun being the second shooter once in a while, because I get a rare glimpse at the groom’s perspective of the wedding day. I get to watch as nerves and anticipation grow ahead of the ceremony or First Look. Though, Patrick hardly gave any of that away. He stayed calm and collected the whole way up to his First Look at Nyla as a bride. But I think there must have been some nerves, because once he saw her, he became even more alive and joyful. It’s like he was himself again, being in her presence and holding her in his arms. It’s beautiful to witness; even more beautiful to create art out of these moments.
Nyla made such a stunning and classical bride! I adored every seam and detail of her dress. And her hair was so beautiful in a French twist. All of it came together so well paired with the biggest, most delicious rose and eucalyptus bouquet I’ve ever seen!
Holy Trinity Catholic Church is a stunning ceremony option right in the heart of Georgetown in D.C. It’s gorgeous ivory interior makes for a sacred backdrop for the union of the bride and groom. Patrick and Nyla embraced a traditional Catholic mass for their wedding ceremony. I appreciated the church’s flexibility with me and Kylie. Not all Catholic churches allow photography, or have certain limits that make it difficult to capture close-ups of the couple. But Holy Trinity granted us the ability to get fairly close to capture the moments shown below.
PRO TIP: If you’re planning a Catholic wedding ceremony, be sure to check with your church on the photography rules! This will help set expectations ahead of time, as not all churches adhere to the same limitations.
If you’ve been around D.C. a while, you know of the iconic National Press Club! This venue has been the meeting place for people of all status and stature – presidents, world leaders, monarchs, journalists, move stars, sports heroes and more. Its history is very interesting; learn more on their website here.
But among the many elite events held here, Patrick and Nyla can now say their wedding reception was one of them! The event space hosted as the perfect spot to celebrate their brand new marriage.
